December 2016/ January 2017 – BIM
2016 was a year of massive upheaval for the UK – but it doesn’t appear to have changed much.
Our monthly tally of UK construction contract awards shows that despite mega projects like Hinkley Point 2 and Heathrow’s third runway getting the green light, the industry’s just ticking over. There’s been no great drama. Things just feel a bit, well, flat.
Brexit might yet deal a hammer-blow to the UK economy during the coming year and Trump might indeed spark a trade war with China; nobody knows - and that’s the problem. We’re paralysed by uncertainty.
We enter 2017 as Island Britain sets itself adrift from Europe and prepares to guard its own borders. And in the words of Dad’s Army’s Sergeant Wilson: “I don’t like it; it’s too quiet…”
