WelcomeIt seems hardly credible that this time last month our main preoccupation was chancellor Rishi Sunak’s plan to phase out red diesel. We knew about Covid-19, of course, but to many of us it was still essentially someone else’s problem. How quickly things can change. Barely four weeks later and nearly all of us are now banished to our homes, some of us suddenly out of a job, if only temporarily.Police are breaking up social gatherings; in Wales it is now illegal to leave your house more than once a day.Nobody is unaffected. Here at The Construction Index, those of our office staff and sales team that have not been furloughed are now working from home. Our editorial team already work from home – we’re the lucky ones. But business has suffered. The cancellation of the Hillhead Show in Buxton and our popular Race Day at Doncaster (both scheduled for June) dealt us a heavy blow. Some advertisers summarily cancelled all bookings though others, I’m glad to say, have stuck with us.But we too must adapt, so this issue of the magazine is the last printed copy you will see for a while. Next month we will publish the magazine in ‘virtual’ format online – alongside our regular daily news.We hope to return to printed format in the summer. And, like everybody else, we can’t wait for the lockdown to be lifted and for life to return to something like normality again.
