March 2012 -The NEW magazine for construction
The digital age has had a huge impact on business in general, and particularly publishing.
In the construction market, it has been felt with the thinning and eventual disappearance of some magazines, notably my former title Contract Journal. Websites have become king – as evidenced by the 300,000 or more monthly visitors to theconstructionindex.co.uk.
But two years ago, with the launch of Apple's iPad, magazines suddenly gained a new lease of life.
The high screen resolution of tablet screens – the third version of the iPad, which came out earlier this month, is four times as sharp as that of a typical laptop – offers exciting new possibilities, including crystal-clear photos and much sharper videos.
So, with the new Construction Index magazine, you have two options: the conventional printed magazine; or the tablet version, where many of the articles include interactive add-ons – a time-lapse of the Red Road demolition project on page 46, and an interview with Crossrail's Western Tunnels project manager Andy Alder on page 14, to name a couple.
Early interest from readers who have signed up online indicates that there is a huge appetite for our iPad edition.
And that reflects a growing uptake of mobile and tablet technology in the industry, demonstrated in our review of the best construction apps on pages 24 & 25.
Enjoy the magazine, whichever version you are reading, and we look forward to receiving your feedback.
