April 2016 – Piling & Ground Engineering
“Innovation” is one of those words that we hear bandied about everywhere these days with little consideration for its true meaning (“passion” is another – and a personal pet hate).
Nobody can deny, however, that within its industry JCB is a true innovator. These days there are few British-owned heavy manufacturing businesses that can claim to be a leader in their field, but JCB is one.
JCB’s latest innovation is a fine example of the firm’s cutting-edge R&D capability. You can read all about it on page 34.
Big companies don’t have a monopoly on smart ideas, though. And on page 21 of this issue we tell the story of an innovator very much at the other end of the scale. Glenn Wood has had to beg favours and borrow money to develop his trench shoring idea. It’s simple but clever, and already some big names are beginning to take notice.
